The Vaux history in Baker Street

On the 4th March 1960 George Edward Vaux, a local chemist from Normanby, entered into Articles of Clerkship for his son, Keith Vaux to join Philip Niman in his firm of solicitors in Albert Road, Middlesbrough. Keith began the long process of serving his time as an Articled Clerk before being admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature on the 1st July 1965. He holds the rare honour of being admitted by "probably the greatest English judge of modern times", The Right Honourable Lord Denning, when he took office in the Court of Appeal as Master of the Rolls.

In 1965, Keith joined John Freer, to begin his long career as a Solicitor in Baker Street. The street soon became the place to go for legal advice and representation in Middlesbrough with many firms establishing themselves in its convenient location close to the Courts.

Keith established himself as an authority in Property Law and Private Client matters with a special niche practice in commercial property and the licensed trade. He was appointed to act in the Northeastern Region for the nation's largest brewers.

In 1993 Keith was joined in his practice by his son Richard. Keith was congratulated by the President of the Law Society in 2015 on completing 50 years on the roll of Solicitors. Whilst many solicitors' firms have come and gone during their time in Baker Street, the Vaux Family have been ever-present.

In 2020 Richard took over the firm of Gary Johnson & Co., established in Baker Street in 1990, where he was joined by his father as consultant. The husband-and-wife team of Richard and Victoria, continue the Vaux tradition with the support of their loyal client base.
