Richard was born and raised in Middlesbrough and followed his father into Law. He began reading for his degree at Northumbria University in 1989 and stayed on to complete his Law Society Final professional exams in 1993.

His next two years were in Articles in Baker Street, Middlesbrough. Here much of his time was spent under the tutelage of John Freer, representing clients in the police station, briefing Barristers and attending Crown Court trials.

Qualifying as a solicitor in 1995 allowed him to develop his advocacy skills and represent his own clients in the Magistrates Courts. Here he conducted his own trials and soon qualified as a Duty Solicitor. Richard was instructed in many high-profile national cases, a number of which became published authorities on issues such as the right of silence in interview and knowledge, autonomy and consent in cases of assault.

Richard became a partner in his first firm in 1999 and continued to build the Criminal department until, in 2006, he turned his attention to residential and commercial property.

On 1st April 2020, during lockdown, Richard took over the firm of Gary Johnson & Co. which had been located as a close neighbour at 14 Baker Street. In October 2020 Richard was joined by his wife, Victoria Vaux, a solicitor specialising in residential conveyancing. In December 2020 Richard acquired the neighbouring property and the revamp into a modern niche practice began developing momentum.

He remains dedicated to providing opportunities to young graduates whose path to qualification is a difficult one. His first trainee solicitor in the new firm qualified in 2023.

Richard's s enviable client list has grown over the years to include developers, building and construction companies, Education Foundations, Charities, Wildlife Trusts, Incorporated Sporting Private Members Clubs, Accountants, Estate Agents and Surveyors, Laboratories, Haulage Companies, Restauranteurs, Publicans and Nightclub owners and professional landlords in a wide variety of property and business transactions. He acts for companies and small businesses. Richard has been instructed in the sale and purchase of property that has ranged from an airfield, golf club, shopping parade, warehouses, gymnasiums, factories, pubs and restaurants to small convenience stores, post offices and fast-food takeaways.

Richard has experience of conducting cases before the Lands Tribunal and Judicial Review proceedings in the Administrative Court and assists private individuals with future planning, complex wills, trusts, powers of attorney and pension schemes.

Richard is a member of the Law Society's Property, Private Client Solicitors, Leadership and Management and Risk and Compliance Sections.

Richard lives locally with his wife and their children. The firm is a proud sponsor of many of their varied sporting clubs.
